Nature rules this southwestern African land with an iron hand - giving life with a deluge of rain, then gradually baking the ground until only the strongest survive the torrid dry season.
For nearly two years, cinematographers David and Carol Hughes followed wildlife at Etosha Pan, a huge dry lake bed in Etosha National Park, patiently filming fascinating close-ups of animal behaviour in all its raw beauty: a baby springbok brought down by cheetahs; a wildebeest giving birth; a ground squirrel arching its tail over its head as a shield against the sun; a giant bullfrog hungrily devouring another; and a bat-eared fox detecting with its large sensitive ears the faint sounds of insects moving underground.
National Geographic has never presented a Special like Etosha. There are no people on camera, and the film has only minimal narration and music. Some viewers may find the wildlife scenes a harsh reality, while others find this vivid encounter with the animal world to be the most extraordinary film footage they have seen anywhere.
