Concerning Part III of the novel, this video focuses on laying out the personal history--a timeline, really--whereby Raskolnikov came to embrace radical ideas. We learn this history from his mother and sister, who arrive in Petersburg at the outset of Part III. His mother asks Razumikhin: “what are his likes and dislikes? Is he always so irritable? What are his wishes and, so to speak, his dreams?” Raz describes Raskolnikov as follows: "I’ve known Rodion for a year and a half: sullen, gloomy, arrogant, proud; recently (and may be much earlier) insecure and hypochondriac. [But also] Magnanimous and kind. . . . As if there really were two opposite characters in him, changing places with each other” (p. 215). And so goes the narrow timeline. The mother and sister broaden it to treat his young adulthood. His dual character has always been there, but the sides of it have changed. He is both self-important AND sacrificial, both attracted to new and rooted in the old. This timeline prepares the way for the decisive meeting with Porfiry in the next video.
