Treating mites in the spring is crucial because mite populations only increase over time (14:46). By treating early, even if the numbers are low, beekeepers can keep mite levels as low as possible (14:16). This proactive approach prevents the population from exploding in mid-summer when there's more brood and mites, and fewer treatment options, some of which may be less effective in higher temperatures (13:56-14:07). Skipping spring treatment is considered a "poor decision" as it makes mite management much harder later in the season (14:31-14:39).
