DNA viruses are those viruses that contain deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) as their genetic material. They replicate inside the host cell’s nucleus (except poxviruses) using host enzymes. These viruses are responsible for many important human infections. Major families include Herpesviridae, Poxviridae, Adenoviridae, Papovaviridae, Parvoviridae, and Hepadnaviridae.
Examples are herpes simplex virus, varicella-zoster virus, poxviruses, adenoviruses, and hepatitis B virus. DNA viruses usually cause latent, chronic, or recurrent infections, and their structure is generally icosahedral, except poxviruses which are large and complex. They play an essential role in medical microbiology because they cause diseases ranging from skin lesions and respiratory infections to hepatitis and cancers.
