The Bankers Association of Zambia (BAZ), through its Chairperson Lowani Chibesakunda, congratulates the Government of the Republic of Zambia on S&P Global Ratings’ upgrade of the country’s long- and short-term foreign-currency sovereign credit ratings from SD to CCC+. This achievement reflects the positive impact of the government’s economic and debt-restructuring reforms under President Hakainde Hichilema, and marks an important step in rebuilding confidence after the elevated sovereign risks that followed the 2020 default.
BAZ notes that this improved rating is expected to attract greater participation from offshore market players, enhance access to foreign direct investment, and ease liquidity costs due to the stable outlook. The Association also applauds the government for increasing foreign-currency reserves to US$5.2 billion through sustained fiscal discipline, progress that will support stronger foreign-exchange inflows and reinforce overall financial stability.
