Harry K. Yoshikawa and his family were among nearly 2,000 Japanese Americans who moved from California to Colorado during a “voluntary evacuation” period designated by the U.S. government in early 1942. While this supposedly “voluntary” resettlement allowed families like the Yoshikawas to avoid incarceration, the journey was not without its perils. Here, Harry recalls being held up by a border patrol agent who threatened to “line you bastards up and shoot you.”
