Maxing Out a 10-YEAR-OLD "Trash Can" Mac Pro

In this video, I bought a 2013 Mac Pro with 32 gigabytes of RAM (DDR3), an 8-core Intel Xeon E5-1680 processor, a 500 gigabyte SSD, and dual AMD FirePro D700 graphics cards from eBay to upgrade it to its fullest potential using other parts found on eBay while doing random commentary over both related and unrelated topics.

Why? For fun!

I upgraded the CPU to a 12-core Intel Xeon E5-2697 processor and doubled the RAM to 64 gigabytes. I decided against upgrading the SSD because it performed just fine, and I will not be doing much with the Mac Pro anyway, other than looking at it; this was just a fun project on which I wanted to embark.

Maxing out this Mac Pro was far more cost-efficient in 2025 than I thought it would be! For less than $300 TOTAL after upgrades, this is a great machine for basic computer functions and web browsing. Although it cannot compete anywhere near the level of Apple Silicon machines and modern PCs, it's a nice little machine. It's remarkable how far computing has advanced in the last decade. This Mac Pro was once peak computing and cost thousands of dollars; now, you can achieve its maxed-out performance several times over by purchasing a baseline Apple Mac Mini with Apple Silicon for $600. I love technology!

After upgrading the device, I encountered some issues with RAM installation (one of the sticks was not inserted completely) as well as encountering "kernel panic," which I had never heard of prior to this experience. Essentially, it is an instance where the Mac comes across an issue it cannot fix itself and is forced to shut down completely, and ultimately has issues starting back up. This persisted, and I even saw the dreaded Mac "pink screen of death," but was ultimately able to fix the problem (as far as I can tell at the time of writing this). I fixed this issue by disassembling the Mac Pro and inspecting the CPU that I had installed for damage. I discovered some mysterious smudges on the CPU that I was able to CAREFULLY clean off with a clean microfiber cloth and 70% isopropyl alcohol. After reinstallation and rebuilding the machine, it performed flawlessly.

I also upgraded my machine from macOS Catalina to macOS Monterey, which is the latest software update that a 2013 Mac Pro will support.
