KUSI Story: Potential San Diego Unified housing development in Serra Mesa

San Diego’s housing crisis has made it increasingly difficult for teachers, staff, and their families to afford to live here, and the District is feeling the effects. This affordability gap impacts our ability to recruit and retain the high-quality employees needed to support our students’ success. By investing in workforce and affordable housing, the District is not only addressing a critical need for our employees but also contributing to the broader effort to create a more equitable and sustainable community.

The proposed project adjacent to the Instructional Media Center is currently in the initial planning phase. As the project is only in the concept phase, no formal community workshops have been conducted yet. However, we recognize the importance of fostering ongoing dialogue and the District intends to engage the Birdland community and to conduct listening sessions regarding the proposed affordable housing project. It is anticipated that community feedback will help to shape the scope of the potential future project.

All projects are carefully designed with public input and the expertise of professional traffic consultants and engineers. This process ensures that we proactively address potential traffic impacts and identify solutions tailored to the unique characteristics of each neighborhood.
