Very few insects have any chance of defending against an attack by ants. Ants will relentlessly attack whatever wanders into their territory, overwhelming much stronger prey with numbers and teamwork.
However, this clever little European beetle has developed a defense strategy which allows it to survive an ant attack - if it's lucky.
I ended up saving the beetle, because I just couldn't watch the ants proceed to chew threw it's legs and antennae.
