The greatest piece of music ever composed.
Happy April Fools! As you might know (or have found out just now), this piece consists of the musician not playing the instrument for exactly 4 minutes and 33 seconds, hence the piece is often described as "4′33″ of silence". However, this is in fact not the correct way to interpret the piece. Cage intended for the "music" to consist not of the sounds the musician makes, but of the sounds that the musician does not make: the background noise.
Fun fact: I did not have the patience to count to 273 to the distant ticking of some clock in the house, and I also forgot to set a timer... I gave up counting after about 100 seconds and silently hummed Alkan's Le Preux in my head until I thought I had sat there for enough time. Turns out I had sat there for almost exactly 4'33''... any less and the attempt would have been ruined.
