Former Peruvian President Ollanta Humala and his wife, Nadine Heredia, were sentenced to 15 years in prison for laundering nearly $3 million in illegal campaign funds from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht and Venezuela’s government under Hugo Chávez. The money supported Humala’s 2006 and 2011 presidential campaigns. Their trial, which began in 2022, also resulted in eight additional convictions. Both Humala and Heredia were held in pretrial detention from 2017 to 2018. This case follows Odebrecht’s 2016 admission of widespread bribery in Latin America. Humala is now the third former Peruvian president imprisoned for corruption, alongside Alejandro Toledo and Alberto Fujimori. Other political figures, including Keiko Fujimori and Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, are also under investigation. On the day of the sentencing, Nadine Heredia sought asylum at the Brazilian embassy in Lima. Peru and Brazil are currently communicating over her request, made under the 1954 Convention on Diplomatic Asylum.
