First up we run some trains through the recently completed road overpass scene, then its on to working with plaster castings. To paint these detail castings of crates, boxes, bins, junk piles, and a few garbage cans, I borrowed a few techniques I learned in painting mini figures for D and D.
The first of these methods is the Zenithal Prime, in which a solid, darker first coat is followed by white sprayed from above to mimic the highlights light would place on an object. I find it really makes the detail pop and makes a model easier to paint, but in addition alters the final color of thin paint coats placed over top. This brings us to the second technique, the wet pallete, which produces a thinner paint for painting details without leaving brush strokes and allows the lights and darks produced from the Zenithal Prime in the prior step to affect the final appearance. It also works quite well to keep even acrylics usable for several days, which is a nice bonus when one has mixed some custom colors!
