Wonderfully whimsical - A Song of Sunshine by Alfred Hollins is not the standard title you come across when you find organ pieces. However, the title very much sums up his whimsical English scherzo. The piece is light in style, as the name suggests. It has to be played rather fast and often consist of rapid harmonic movement with 4-5 voiced chords on every ⅛-note.
Born in 1865 in Kingston upon Hull, Alfred Hollins was blind from birth. He grew up with his aunt who introduced him to the piano. His taste for music continued at Wilberforce Institution for the Blind in York and later he was accepted into music academy.
He became famous and in 1878 he gave a concert at Windsor in the presence of Queen Victoria. Later he continued studies at Hans von Bülow.
Alfred Hollins had many concert tours throughout his life, amongst others in the USA and South Africa.
This rendition is played on my Hauptwerk organ on the sample set of Rotterdam by Sonus Paradisi.
