Calypso Beach – Crete | Greece [4K]

The Pirate Fjord or Calypso Beach is located 31 km south of Rethymno, in an isolated harbor south of Kakomoura peninsula, between Plakias and Preveli. It is called Karavos and it is a long narrow bay of about 100 meters formed between large vertical rocks. It creates in this way a protected natural harbor that ends in a small sandy beach, 2 meters wide.
It is believed that during the Byzantine period pirates found refuge there, which gave the name to Karavos. The area has become very famous in recent years and hundreds of local and foreign tourists visit it to swim and take pictures with this unique background.
It is a truly enchanting place that fascinates you from the first glance, especially when you see it from above. The similarity with the Norwegian fjords is obvious but with the colors and wild beauty of Crete.
As far as mythology is concerned, it is the place where Odysseus, enchanted by the beauty of the place and the queen Calypso, stayed there for seven years before returning to Ithaca. The images one sees explain why, according to legend, it is this place that bewitched Odysseus.
Even the seabed in this fjord in Crete is impressive. With a dive, aspiring divers can discover the rarest seabed relief in the Mediterranean, while the picture is completed with the rich life of fish, plants and corals.
