How did goth emerge from the fear, uncertainty, and political unrest of 1980s Britain?
In this video, I explore the historical and cultural conditions that gave rise to the goth subculture, drawing on my published research in Gothic Studies (University of Manchester Press) and interviews with over 80 people who participated in the original UK goth scene. I examine how Cold War anxiety, the constant threat of nuclear war, and the social devastation of Thatcher-era England shaped the sound, aesthetics, and emotional core of gothic rock and post-punk music.
Using oral histories, firsthand accounts, and examples from bands and spaces connected to Batcave, Slimelight, Bauhaus, Alien Sex Fiend, and more, I argue that goth was a meaningful artistic response to fear, alienation, and social collapse. This video provides historical context for goth’s origins, tracing its roots in punk, horror cinema, expressionist film, and camp performance, while setting the stage for future discussions on goth’s music, feminist strategies, and ideological differences from punk and heavy metal.
