The Espinhaço Institute paid a technical visit to Fazenda Sanga Puitã. The site, which received environmental intervention by the Pró-Águas Cerrado project, has benefited immensely from improved water quantity and quality.
The Pró-Águas Cerrado project is the result of a partnership between the Espinhaço Institute and the Escola Superior do Agronegócio Internacional (ESAI), located at Fazenda Sanga Puitã, in the municipality of Cristalina, Goiás and the Federal District.
The aim of the project is to guarantee rural development combined with the strengthening of ecosystem services, ensuring sustainable agricultural and livestock production with greater profitability for rural producers. Based on this concept, Pró-Águas Cerrado carries out a series of environmental interventions that support water security, through actions to restore native vegetation and conserve soil and water, combined with capacity building for all collaborators, with Environmental Education dynamics and the dissemination of new models to all those who visit the Project.
The actions to restore native vegetation in the Cerrado Biome implemented by the Espinhaço Institute in Pró-Águas Cerrado have already resulted in the recovery of more than 100 (one hundred) hectares of forest on the Sanga Puitã farm, in partnership with ESAI, creating a virtuous cycle for water production on the farm.
In addition, other strategies, such as soil and water conservation, are being carried out in the context of the Nature Based Solutions expanding the green infrastructure in the area of the farm and its associated watershed. These initiatives also contribute to the revitalization of the São Francisco River Basin, as well as being a demonstration project for the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Decade of Ecosystem Restoration (UN), contributing to territorial resilience in the Midwest region of Brazil and simultaneously minimizing the effects of climate change.
