A real “Merrie England” tune from a guitar arrangement all classical guitarists have probably suffered with at some time or another! Will Kemp (c. 1560–c. 1603) was an actor in Shakespeare’s “The Lord Chamberlain's Men” who famously Morris danced from London to Norwich in the spring of 1600, and subsequently published an account of his exploits as “Kemps nine daies wonder”. The tune was very popular in the 17th century and appeared in the first edition of John Playford’s "English Dancing Master”, although if this was indeed the tune that accompanied Kemp on his marathon, he must have been pretty sick of it after nine daies!
