Trout Strikes and Hook Sets: #8 of The Nine Essential Skills for Tight Line and Euro Nymphing

Think about how a trout takes a real nymph. How far does it move? How aggressive does it eat? And how fast can it eject the artificial?

Then consider what a trout taking a nymph does to our tight line system. That's strike detection. And how we detect a strike is different whether we're leading or tracking the flies.

Don't set on anything. That's bad advice. Set on anything unusual or unexpected.

And when we set the hook, set fast but not far. A super-quick, ten-inch hook set connects with far more trout than a casual lift of the rod tip. Set fast, not far.
