Eugene Bullard’s life defies belief.
Born in Georgia in 1895, he escaped the racism of the American South by running away to Europe as a teenager.
By World War I, he had joined the French Foreign Legion, becoming the world’s first Black fighter pilot — earning the nickname “The Black Swallow of Death.”
But Bullard’s story didn’t end after the guns fell silent.
After WWI, he built a new life in Paris — boxing professionally, playing jazz with Louis Armstrong, and running a nightclub that attracted stars like Josephine Baker, Ernest Hemingway, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.
When World War II broke out, Bullard once again took up arms — this time for France.
He fought at the Battle of Orléans, was wounded by shrapnel, and later joined the French Resistance.
Inside his nightclub, he secretly spied on German officers, passing vital intelligence to the Allies while pretending to serve drinks.
But as the Nazis closed in, Bullard fled with his daughters to the United States.
There, the man celebrated as a hero in France was ignored by his own country — living the rest of his life in quiet obscurity.
It wasn’t until decades later that history began to remember him: the pilot, the soldier, the spy, and the man who refused to give up his fight for dignity.
