The year begins with afterburners, noise, and pain.
On Monday, January 5th, two Mirage 2000s of the French Air Force had to divert to Basel due to dense fog in Luxeuil. Because one of the aircraft had a technical problem, the return flight had to be postponed.
Since it wasn't clear which direction they would take off in until takeoff, I was standing in the middle. Because the Swiss border isn't far away, a special takeoff procedure was used. With afterburners engaged, both aircraft climbed steeply to about 1000 meters and then turned west. The altitude reduces noise pollution, and the steep climb prevents the aircraft from getting too close to the Swiss border.
