Altafulla is a municipality and town in the province of Tarragona, in Catalonia. Nestled on the southeast slope of a 52-meter-high mountain, next to the Mediterranean coast, it belongs to the Tarragonés region and is framed in the natural and historical region of Campo de Tarragona.
The castle of Altafulla or Castle of Montserrat is a castle palace of Tarragona dates from 1059 . «Between the 10th and 11th centuries, the final stretch of the Gaià river was the southernmost area of the network of castles and fortifications that, for almost two hundred years, marked the boundaries between the county of Barcelona and the territories that they belonged to Al-Andalus.
Vila Closa is the old medieval walled town. However, most of the houses that can be seen were built during the eighteenth century, a time of great development in the population, thanks to the export of agricultural products to the American colonies. This gave birth to a powerful local oligarchy and led to great population growth. In the seventy years after 1718 the population went from 728 to 1724 inhabitants. The set of buildings that arose from this impulse forms an urban plot of great historical, architectural and tourist interest.
