ARCTIC TSUNAMIGENIC SLOPE INSTABILITIES PARTNERSHIP
(ARCTIC T-SLIP)
Join the Arctic Tsunamigenic Slope Instabilities Partnership (Arctic T-Slip) for a Tuesday Night Science Talk and Workshop at the Cordova Center from 5:30-8:00 pm. Thawing permafrost, receding glaciers, and more frequent extreme rain have increased the risks of landslide-induced tsunamis impacting coastal Alaskan communities. Cordova sits near mountains with a history of giant landslides, like one that covered the upper part of Goodwin Glacier in 2023. As the lakes at the toes of Sheridan and Scott glaciers grow, lake tsunamis and outburst floods may be an emerging hazard. This presentation will provide an opportunity to hear from Hig (Bretwood Higman) about what we’re learning from recent events in Alaska, including the 2024 Pedersen Lagoon and the 2025 Tracy Arm landslide-generated tsunamis. Following the presentation, please stay for a facilitated discussion on tsunami research and disaster preparedness, as well as opportunities for Cordova's involvement.
