Pest-Ofener-Eissport-Galopp, Op. 96 - Eduard Strauss

"Pest-Ofen Ice Sports Galop". On 3 February 1873 Eduard Strauss and his orchestra arrived in the Hungarian city of Pest, on the east bank of the River Danube, to play the music for that night’s Ice Skating Club Ball in the Redoutensale. (Just nine months later, Pest was unified with the west bank cities of Buda—its old German name was Ofen—and Obuda to form the single city of Budapest.) Tickets for this event were restricted to 1,600 to facilitate unobstructed dancing and Eduard dedicated to the ball-organising committee of the Pest-Ofen Ice Skating Club his Pester Eislaufgalopp (‘Pest Ice Skating Galop’), later published as the Pest-Ofener-Eissport-Galopp. The evening edition of the following day’s Pesti Napló questioned whether Strauss had under-delivered against public expectation, but the Ungarischer Lloyd enthused that ‘the maestro’s [latest] composition, as well as his conducting, were showered with applause.’ Ice skaters at the ball were doubtless entranced by the way Strauss introduced into the instrumentation of his catchy galop their jumps, spins and flowing glides.
