In this video, I continue a long-term documentary photography project that explores rural decline and modern urbanization through a haunting subject: abandoned houses burned down during firefighter training exercises in the Finnish countryside. Traveling several hours from home on a freezing winter day, I document one of these controlled burns, focusing only on the house itself and the flames—leaving people and firefighters out of the frame to preserve a sense of mystery. The contrast between bright sunlight, deep snow, and intense fire creates a surreal atmosphere that reflects both loss and transformation in places that are slowly disappearing.
All photographs in this episode are shot on film using the Mamiya 7 II and Kodak Portra 400, a combination that handles extreme highlights and shadows far better than digital in this kind of situation.
This project is about more than burning buildings—it’s about time, memory, and the quiet stories hidden in forgotten places. Thanks for watching, and feel free to support the project by checking out the limited edition darkroom prints linked in the beginning of the description.
