Twisting and turning, the highway system, not just in the Houston area but all around Texas is pretty darn impressive. It's a mega turnpike that swirls in concise order to get you exactly where you want to be. No bull. It's big, but it's simple. The important part to remember is there are often 2 lane on-ramps. Everyone is trying to get over, even from the outer most lane so things get a little squished. similarly, because there are so many connections to other highway and expressways the exit ramps from one to the other get backed up and backed up again. Don' the that person who cuts the line. Remember, Texan's have guns and they like them.
Beyond that (and directly recommended by a local friend) downtown Houston is not where you want to go. It, like most cities this size in America are just a shell. There aren't people walking around. Nobody is in those buildings. Everyone is working from home. And home means overseas in many cases.
Go to Montrose. It was, although small, a Capital Hill (Seattle) feel. A North Beach (San Francisco) vibe. A River North (Chicago, (The bar scene)) energy. Anyhow, the point is, Houston is huge. Harris County is the 3rd largest in America. Explore.
