In this video, I dive into the notorious "pay-to-play" ticket scam that was rampant on the Sunset Strip during the height of the glam metal era. From iconic venues like Gazzarri's, The Whisky, The Roxy, and Doug Weston's Troubadour, bands were forced to buy their own tickets, then hustle to sell them just to get on stage. I share my personal experiences playing in hair bands, the struggle of selling tickets, and how this broken system impacted band dynamics and economics. Often, you'd end up in the hole, paying the promoter more than you'd make.
Shockingly, after the Sunset Strip's scene faded, I discovered that Nashville—once thought to be free of such schemes—had started adopting the same pay-to-play model, stuck in the past and recycling bad practices. Tune in as I break down this frustrating reality and how it affects musicians today.
