(18 Apr 2017) At least 170 illegal migrants from Mali were deported from Libya on Tuesday as the country struggles to deal with the influx of migrants attempting to reach Europe from its shores.
Libyan detention centres are overcrowded by illegal migrants which is putting a strain on the country to house and feed the migrants.
The International Organisation for Migration assisted the illegal migrants from Mali onto planes at Tripoli Mitiga airport enroute to the Malian capital Bamako.
There are plans to deport more migrants in the near future especially now that African embassies in Tripoli are starting to cooperate with the Libyan immigration department.
The majority of the illegal migrants held in Libyan detention centres come from Nigeria, Niger, Gambia, Somalia and Mali according to Libyan Illegal Immigration department.
The migrant crisis began to escalate dangerously in 2015 when high numbers of unauthorised foreign nationals attempted to travel to the European Union.
According to the United Nations, the most dangerous migration route is from Libya to Italy, where the UN estimates one in every 47 refugees dies.
The UN recently reported that migrants in Libya are subject to serious human rights violations and abuses.
