I have been seeing images on the internet of paintings done with coffee from time to time and I've always wanted to try it out for myself, so here we are! At first I was going to do a face portrait, but then I decided to make the wise decision of choosing a simpler design...so I chose a faceless character, haha!
I'll be honest, painting with coffee was not as easy as I thought it would be...or maybe my design choice was not easy enough for a first try. Either way, I found out that you could only build up so much opacity, and it does not blend well, which makes sense, since it's not paint. I really wanted to just stick to using coffee from beginning to end, but I eventually had to use a watercolor pencil to get the darker shading. Another thing is that coffee does not like the basic, wood based watercolor paper you find in the stores! I started out with that stuff only to get the most terrible "cauliflowers"! I didn't even try to continue it, so I started over with 100% cotton paper. As hard as it was, I'm pleased with the result, and I'm in love with that sepia tone!
I used "Arches" 100% watercolor paper, "Artist's Loft" watercolor brushes, watercolor and color pencils (off brand), and "Kirkland" brand coffee.
