History
This band was formed in Middleton in Manchester in 1981 after a young Mark Burgess was inspired to form a band by Mark Perry, or Mark P as he was known, of the fanzine 'Sniffin' Glue' and the early experimental punk band ATV/Alternative Television. As a tribute to ATV The Chameleons would often finish their set with the ATV song 'Splitting In Two' when several members of the band would swop instruments to play the song.
The band recorded a lot of their early demos and songs at Parish Bowman Recording Studios in Middleton with the help of resident producer and engineer Martin.
The band split up in 1987 with Mark and John forming The Sun And The Moon and Reg and Dave formed The Reegs. Mark Burgess also had a band in the early '90's called 'The Sons Of God'.
The Chameleons reformed in 2000, releasing their 4th studio album, 'Why Call It Anything?', and two Acoustic albums.
The band split up again in 2003 after renewed tensions appeared between band members and Mark and John continued touring and playing Chameleons' songs as Chameleons Vox.
John Lever sadly passed away in 2017 and so Chameleons Vox tours became much less frequent.
Reg Smithies rejoined Mark Burgess and the band reverted to The Chameleons' name in 2021. They have since toured every year since and have recorded and just released a new album, 'Arctic Moon- in 2025.
THE CHAMELEONS ARE ONE OF THE MOST UNDERATED BANDS EVER DESPITE THE FACT THAT THEIR MUSIC HAS BEEN SO INFLUENTIAL TO SO MANY BANDS.
