The first half of the video shows rounded detrital quartz grains of a sandstone with syntaxial overgrowths of quartz (quartz cement). Original detrital grains are outlined by hematite stains (00:15 to 00:20). The detrital grains are also relatively strain free, i.e. not particularly undulose. The second half of the video shows quartzite, a metamorphic rock in which the quartz is extensively recrystallized. The quartz in this rock is strongly undulose and grain boundaries are sutured, due to grain-boundary migration and “bulging”. A rock like the sandstone may have been the protolith for the quartzite.
This video was produced during the spring of 2020, at the heart of COVID, as part of my effort to teach petrology online.
