Recently, I hosted Mr. Satya Bhavaraju on the podcast on the subject of Data Centres in India: Present and Future.
Here is a segment of our conversation in which he is explaining the reasons for the rise of Data Centres in general and specifically in India.
Data centres are the backbone of our digital world, powering everything from enterprise workloads to social media platforms and banking transactions.
India's data center journey started later, but we've made significant progress.
With a capacity of 1.8 gigawatt by 2024, we contribute 2% of global capacity, despite generating 20% of global data. However, market analysts project that by 2030, our capacity will reach 8 gigawatts.
As the concept of sovereign data centers gains traction, we must have 20% of global data center capacity. This means we should aim for 60 gigawatts by 2030. With our massive smartphone penetration and high data consumption, there is immense growth potential. Data nativity and keeping our data within our borders, creating jobs and propelling the local economy.
The highly anticipated episode is set to premiere on April 18, 2025, at 7 PM IST on YouTube and various podcast platforms—mark your calendars. My conversation with Satya was an absolute delight, effortlessly shifting between topics like his career journey across India, Taiwan, and Singapore, the intricate world of geopolitics, the evolution of groundbreaking technologies, the crucial role of data centers, and the fascinating cooling systems that sustain them.
This was truly a Master Class, and I hope viewers and listeners find it just as enriching, offering fresh insights and deep learning on these compelling subjects. Stay tuned!
