Reducing the Impacts of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods

Accelerated glacial melt in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region is threatening to undo decades of development progress and puts millions at risk from increased hazards.

While the frequency and intensity of hazards can’t be controlled, their impact can be reduced.

ADB is helping countries in the region assess multi-hazard risks, design early warning systems, and develop infrastructure projects that can withstand accelerated glacial melt and other climate change impacts.

The bank is also developing financing solutions such as insurance to manage the risks and cost-effectiveness of building resilient infrastructure.
