2024 Fish Recap: Port Lands Flood Protection Project

Fish are enjoying their new home in the new mouth for the Don River! We are so excited to share this video showing continued success of the new fish coves and wetlands in the Port Lands. Restoring a natural shoreline creates ecological habitats for all kinds of wildlife. This video shows several fish species using the new habitat we built: bowfin, northern pike, walleye, pumpkinseed, banded killifish, and fathead minnow. Thanks to Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) for the footage!

Canoe Cove is part of the future park we are building along the Polson Slip. Construction of the west cove was completed in 2019, along the Keating Channel. Both areas previously offered very poor fish habitat. The straight, vertical walls of the Keating Channel and Polson Slip were unappealing for fish – like a house with no furniture. The wetlands are within the new river valley we built, replacing contaminated, post-industrial lands.

The coves were designed by Interfluve and Michael Van Valkenburg Associates and TRCA and Aquatic Habitat Toronto have been part of the team effort to bring life to this project.
