See a 7-string played right: / hopkinsas
See - I told 'ya. I DO review other guitars besides Gibsons! This time a pointy, 7-String B.C. Rich Custom Shop stopped by to say hello. I've recently partnered with a local area pawn shop to help them get some nice Gibsons into their store and they brought this BC Rich over hoping I would know something about it.
My knowledge on BC Rich guitars is very limited. Before this 7-string, all I've had was a 1980 Rich Bich 10-String and a cheapy Trace Warbeast bolt on neck guitar back in my teen years.
When I first saw this 7 string, I had no idea what it was. The shop said it was in on pawn and the guy never came back for it - so it has sat in the back of their shop for 8 months since the shop couldn't ID the guitar. They left it with me to do some investigating. They get knowledge on their guitar - I get an interesting guitar on my channel - win/win.
My first step was to locate the serial number. It took awhile, but I eventually found it on the fretboard! This one is 20411. This made the guitar a Custom Shop Warlock model from 2000. BC Rich serials are a little weird after 2000. Before 1999, it was fairly straightforward - YYppp. So 99025 would mean 1999 - 25th in production. Now in 2000+ it follows that same format, but you have to know the leading 2 means 2000 and the final year digit means the ending number. 20411 means 2000 - 411th in production in this case. 21411 would mean 2001 - 411th in production. It's a little confusing, but this is what I found.
This guitar has a licensed Floyd Rose on it that really badly needs set-up. The neck also needs adjusted, the output jack requires some work or replacement and the electronics need some tightening. Since this is not my guitar and I'm not a certified tech for this type of guitar - I didn't want to touch it. If you want to buy this guitar, please set aside $200 to have this guitar fully serviced before gigging.
This thing stays in tune just about as well as you'd think an unlocked nut, floyd rose guitar would - not at all haha. The demo kind of sucks on this one, but at least I tried to get some sounds out of the guitar.
I wasn't even going to blacklight this guitar, but I was just going through my usual filming process and turned the light on. To my surprise, there was an invisible signature on the back of the headstock! I initially thought this was a signature of a previous owner, but it turned out to be of the Founder of B.C. Rich guitar's son - Bernie Rico Jr!
Bernie apparently signs the guitars that he personally built so I think that this makes this one a little bit special. Apparently, Mr. Jr also has his own guitar company in which he scammed a lot of people out of a lot of down payments. I don't know a lot about that story, but it was interesting to read about.
Overall, a 7-string guitar has a much wider and thinner neck than a regular 6-string. It helps you develop proper technique (thumb under the neck) and it allows you to hit notes you couldn't before. I feel blinded by the extra B string and I only want to play that one though!
7 Strings aren't only for Death-Metal though! Many accomplished jazz players and soloists like YouTuber Dovydas use a 7 string - though theirs are generally less pointy.
I had fun trying this guitar out. I think I'd like to try a 7-string Gibson one day that doesn't have a trem unit or those scary Steinberger Tuner's that break.
