IVF means in vitro fertilization and is also called a test tube baby. In this procedure,the female partner has to undergo a series of injections of fertility drugs and ovulation is induced.

Due to this many eggs (oocytes) are matured at a time whereas
in the natural menstrual cycle only one egg matures every month. IVF increases chances of getting pregnant. Then eggs are allowed to meet sperm in a petri dish.
Embryos are formed in the test tube and transferred with the help of ultrasound. It is also called assisted reproductive technology or ART.

Whereas in natural pregnancy after sexual intercourse formed embryo gets implanted in fallopian tubes.

Who opt for IVF?
· Couples with infertility disorders
· Male partners are not able to produce high quality sperm or adequate quantity.
· Female partner are not able to produce high quality eggs
· Blockage in the fallopian tubes

Myths: One common prejudice which is prevalent even among the educated class is that IVF babies are not completely normal as they are the products of technical expertise of the doctors. Truth is that IVF babies are as normal as any other baby born through a natural process mentally as well as physically.

Care: Women getting pregnant normally do not know that they got pregnant till they miss their periods but in IVF after embryo transfer extreme care is executed for successful implantation. Pregnancy symptoms like cramping, nausea, bloating also present in IVF pregnancy due to hormonal injections that are given to the women.
The hormonal injections required to mature more eggs at a time, sometime may lead to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome
OHSS or ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is the only disadvantage of IVF which is not seen in normal pregnancy.

Intense care is required in women with IVF pregnancy from embryo transfer to implantation. After that also frequent scanning is needed to monitor missed abortion or any other complications. 10 to12 weeks of IVF pregnancy is confirmed to be safe and all care should be taken as normal pregnancy.
Complications like gestational diabetes, blood pressure and preterm labour are more often seen in IVF pregnancy than normal pregnancy due hormonal induction.

Anxiety is more in IVF pregnancy as obviously it is not a natural process.
Conclusion: Though the process of pregnancy achieved is different, other
parameters are the same. When you hold your little one in your arms, the effort and emotional stress is totally worth it.
