The Battle for Waldfeucht refers to a clash that occurred during World War II, specifically during Operation Blackcock in January 1945.

Operation Blackcock was a British 2nd Army offensive launched on January 14, 1945, to clear the Roer Triangle of German forces. It involved fierce fighting in challenging winter conditions, focusing on securing a series of German and Dutch towns.

Waldfeucht was a small German town strategically located on the Roman road from Heerlen - Xanten and also on the road leading from Heinsberg through the Echter Bruch to the Maasland. This historical importance and location made its control desirable for centuries, with Geldern, Burgundy, Brabant, and Heinsberg contesting ownership.

British Capture: British forces, specifically the 5th Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB), eventually captured Waldfeucht on January 20th, 1945.

On January 21st, 1945, German forces launched a significant counter-attack to reclaim Waldfeucht. Elements of the 176th Infanterie Division, supported by the 301 Funklenk Abt and 341 StuG Brigade, mounted a serious assault on the 5th KOSB, who had just taken the town and were not yet dug in.

"Jocks vs Tigers": Fifteen German assault guns, including two Tiger I tanks, were involved in the counter-attack. The British defenders, lacking Sherman tank support, relied on two 6-pounder anti-tank guns to engage the German armor. They successfully destroyed both Tiger tanks.

The German counter-attack on Waldfeucht was ultimately beaten back.
This battle highlights the fierce resistance encountered by the Allies during Operation Blackcock and the effectiveness of British anti-tank defenses against superior German armor.

The Imperial War Museum holds footage and photos of British soldiers advancing into Waldfeucht and the destroyed Tiger tanks. This engagement was a smaller, yet impactful, part of the larger Operation Blackcock and the overall Western Front campaign during the concluding stages of World War II.
