Synopsis of lesson 375:
Vaasanas and Samskara.
Technology evolved by Patanjalas-handling, managing, arranging. Carving, sculpting, chiseling.
This brings in the concept of Granthis which are junctions of knots. They are called, Vishnu, Rudra and Brahma granthis. Aum is the master key to the management of these granthis. Aum is also the key for Samadhi, Samprajnata and Asamprajnata. The concept of Samyama was also discussed. Is master key to Shamanam Vaasana kshaya.
One dimension how Aum works. Three syllables- A- U- M
The A works on the belly, loosening the Granthi there where there are several knots. Belly is one region of Granthi.
U works on another locus, the chest and heart region. These are Vasana of emotions, sentiments, love, attachment.
M works on the brain region. That’s the region of ahamkara Pitha or identity locus.
The three are Vasana, Bhavana and Ahamkara Pitha.
The one in belly and abdominal region is Brahmagranthi. It is the seat of generation and Brahma is said to be the generator in the trinity.
The one in the heart is Vishnu Granthi
The one in the head is Rudra Granthi.
Together they are known as the Granthi traya. They are to be suitably arranged for parramatta and Adhyatma .
According to Adhyatma, Vaasanas are Anadi and therefore Ananta, endless.
They are beginning less but not endless, not Ananta but they are Shanta. Otherwise Adhyatma would not have spoken of Moksha or liberation.
Parama purushartha then becomes meaningful.
It has been explained in the satkaryavada of Sankhya philosophy or Sankhya Darshana.
The theory of satkaryavada says that whatever exists never comes to an end but only changes form.
Are Vasana Sat or asat?
If Sat, they must exist. If Asat, they why be worried about it?
Astikas have given an argument that Vasana are Anadi or beginning less, but they are not entities. They come together as an assembly. This assembly of certain elements or factors give us a certain status. This is the Vaasana. In Patanjala system it is called assembly.
Eg., a bicycle is made of an assembly of certain parts. When they come together, it functions as a bicycle.
In Kaivalya pada Patanjali mentions, Hetu, Phala, Aashraya, Alambana. Coming together of these gives a form and shape and function.
If the components are dismantled, then they will no longer function like a bicycle.
So handling Vaasanas is like dismantling the whole. The parts cannot function like the whole.
Hetu means the cause or reason. What is the reason for Vaasanas? The cause is said to be Avidya. This leads to Vaasanas which are the effects.
Phala is the fruit which comes in the form of pleasure or pain.
Moving away from Vaasanas would be possible by following Moksha Sadhana. This is Apavarga or Davi Sampada and not Bhoga which is Asuri Sampada.
Pranayama practices if accomplished, they these vasana will stop tormenting us.
Ashraya means resort. Vaasanaas need support. Without support they will become extinct.
The fourth is Aalambanam or support. They are the vishayas. They support Avidya then the Vasana will flourish and play havoc.
So, all these Vaasanas have to be dissembled.
How? By Aahara- Vihaara, Aachara- Vichaara, sat sanga, satva Sanga, Sadhana sanga, Shastra sanga etc.When the mind is drawn inwards, the dissembling process can happen. The fires of yoga and Jnana can help in this process.
