Originally activated as the 10th Light Division (Alpine) in 1943, the division was redesignated the 10th Mountain Division in 1944 and fought in the mountains of Italy in some of the roughest terrain in World War II. On 5 May 1945, the division reached Nauders, Austria, just beyond the Reschen Pass, where it made contact with German forces being pushed south by the U.S. Seventh Army. A status quo was maintained until the enemy headquarters involved had completed their surrender to the Seventh. On 6 May, 10th Mountain troops met the 44th Infantry Division of Seventh Army.
Following the war, the division was deactivated, only to be reactivated and redesignated as the 10th Infantry Division in 1948. The division first acted as a training division and, in 1954, was converted to a full combat division and sent to Germany before being deactivated again in 1958.
Reactivated again in 1985, the division was designated the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) to historically tie it to the World War II division and to also better describe its modern disposition.

85th Infantry Reconstituted 10 July 1943 in the Army of the United States as the 85th Infantry. activated 15 July 1943 at Camp Hale, Colorado. assigned to the 10th Mountain Division, 15 July 1943 Redesignated 85th Mountain Infantry and assigned to the 10th Mountain Division 6 November 1944. Inactivated on 30 November 1945 at Camp Carson, Colorado. Redesignated 85th Infantry and assigned to 10th Infantry Division 18 June 1948, allotted to the regular Army 25 June 1948. Activated 1 July 1948 at Fort Riley, Kansas. Inactivated 1 July 1957 in Germany.
The 3rd Battalion, 85th Infantry Regiment was reactivated at Fort Drum, NY on 22 August 2007 as the warrior transition unit for Fort Drum NY and the Northeastern United States.

The 86th Infantry Regiment was constituted on 25 November 1942 in the Army of the United States as the 86th Infantry. It was activated between 12 December 1942 and 1 May 1943 at Camp Hale, Colorado, and assigned to the 10th Mountain Division on 15 July 1943. The regiment was redesignated the 86th Mountain Infantry and assigned to the 10th Mountain Division on 6 November 1944. It was inactivated on 27 November 1945 at Camp Carson, Colorado.
The regiment was redesignated the 86th Infantry and assigned to 10th Infantry Division on 18 June 1948. It was allotted to the regular Army on 25 June 1948, and activated on 1 July 1948 at Fort Riley, Kansas. The 86th was inactivated for the last time on 1 July 1957 in Germany.
Distinctive unit insignia

The 87th Mountain Infantry Battalion was activated on 15 November 1941 at Fort Lewis, Washington, with Lieutenant Colonel Onslow S. Rolfe as the commanding officer. This unit was the first American unit of mountain troops. On 12 May 1942, the regiment was reorganized as the 87th Mountain Infantry, with the remainder of the regiment activated there on 25 May 1942. It was expanded into a regiment in the summer of 1942 and moved to Camp Hale, Colorado, where it joined the 10th Mountain Division. On 29 July 1943, the regiment sailed to the Aleutian Islands as part of Amphibious Task Force 9. Also included in Task Force Force 9 were the First Special Service Force and the 13th Canadian Infantry Brigade. On 24 December 1943, it returned to Camp Carson, Colorado, and returned to the 10th Mountain Division on 22 February 1944, replacing the 90th Infantry Regiment. The regiment was part of the Italian Campaign from January 1945 to the end of the campaign, and remained as part of the occupying force until August 1945.
