Cruising Milford Sound: Tasman Sea to the Heart of the Alps

Milford Sound runs 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) inland from the Tasman Sea at Dale Point —the mouth of the fiord—and is surrounded by sheer rock faces that rise 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) or more on either side. Milford Sound is a magnificent fiord in Fiordland National Park carved by glaciers, As a fiord, Milford Sound was formed by a process of glaciation over millions of years. The village at the end of the fiord is also known as Milford Sound. Milford Sound sports two permanent waterfalls, Lady Bowen Falls and Stirling Falls. After heavy rain temporary waterfalls can be seen running down the steep sided rock faces that line the fiord.

The "alps of New Zealand" refers to the Southern Alps, a major mountain range that runs the length of the country's South Island. They are the highest and most heavily glaciated mountain range in Australasia, with peaks like Aoraki/Mount Cook being the country's tallest mountain at 3,724 meters (12,218 feet). The range is known for its dramatic scenery, including snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and deep valleys, and forms a significant geological and climatic boundary for the island.
