❝Were we actually in love or were we blinded by the interest?❞

I watched The Interest of Love at the end of last year and have tried to upload this video several times this year to no avail. This is definitely not the kind of drama for anyone looking for a light or cute romance. Honestly, I was mostly rooting for the second female lead because she felt like the more charming character, and I found myself aspiring to be more like her. But by the end, I found myself reconnecting with the main couple and really resonating with their story. They remind me of Love Rain, one of my favorite dramas and one of the first I watched. There’s just something about characters who have so much love and yearning for each other that really tugs at my heartstrings and keeps me hooked.

I loved the monologues toward the end, especially when they were walking up the hill together, reflecting on all the “what-ifs” from their journey. The line, “Were we actually in love, or were we blinded by the interest?” really stood out to me. The drama’s English title uses the word “interest” to link to the characters’ work at the bank and the attraction (or love) that develops between them. But the word translated as "interest" — 이해 — actually means “understanding” in Korean. I find the duality of the title so intriguing, and I actually prefer the nuance in the original. If we look at it through that lens, it seems like Su-yeong and Sang-su were both desperately seeking understanding in their lives. They were waiting for love that could truly understand their individual circumstances. So when they ask if they were simply two people who understood each other (because they were so alike), or if they genuinely loved each other (despite all the trials they went through), it adds a whole different layer to their relationship.

Side note: It was tough trying to fit in everything that the 16-episode format had to offer. I keep wondering how I used to handle that, and I found myself feeling pretty grateful for the shorter, 12-episode formats that are more common these days. Editing something like When the Phone Rings felt so much more seamless in that regard. But for pure entertainment—just the experience of watching—I still prefer having more episodes to dive into.
