Kenya - Pope John Paul II Arrives In Nairobi

Pope John Paul II arrived in Nairobi on Monday (18/9) on the third
and final leg of his African tour. Speaking to the crowds
welcoming him at Jomo Kenyatta airport, the pontiff called on
Africans to promote development which would not only benefit them
economically but would also create a civilisation of respect for
all members of the society. President Daniel Arap Moi welcomed
the Pope in a brief speech. John Paul II then rode in a bullet-proof Mercedes Benz from the airport to the city centre. Controversy surrounding the visit has been aroused by the refusal of a Muslim cleric to take part in the welcome ceremony. Some Muslims have also vowed to boycott his visit. Sheikh Ali Shee, a Muslim imam (priest) who had been due to address the pope at a ceremony Tuesday, said he had pulled out because the Catholic Church's desire "to Christianise the African continent before the year 2000 has been taken as a provocation, a declaration of war."
