BRITISH writer Nikesh Shukla speaks to us about his involvement in a new project called ‘Built by Sound’ which celebrates daytime clubbing culture, in the city of Bradford, Yorkshire.
An exhibition which is a mixed reality and immersive show – you wear headsets to experience – opens in the city tomorrow (Friday 21).
It wasn’t just an experience but a movement of sorts – a safe place for Asians in Britain to dance, socialise and have fun and while this is about Bradford, daytime clubbers were all over the UK, especially where there were significant South Asian communities.
This was all during a time when many public spaces were not totally safe or comfortable for people of colour – especially those who wanted to go out, dance and meet other young people beyond their family or school circle.
Shukla tells about his late mother who grew up in the city and his family had experience of this phenomena and that it brought his mother and others into activism, anti-racism campaigning, education and sometimes, politics too.
