The fourth film that Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers appeared in together was the very successful 1935 RKO production, “Top Hat,” with music by Irving Berlin. This film marks the first time that Astaire and Berlin met, and it was the beginning of a lifelong friendship. Astaire and Berlin eventually worked on six pictures together. Berlin loved writing for Astaire because of his elegant, effective way of delivering his songs, and considered “Top Hat, White Tie and Tails” the best song he had written for all of the Astaire films.
The sartorial ensemble of this scene became one of Astaire's most iconic on-screen looks, and the dance that Astaire choreographed to this song is sophisticated, dynamic, creative, and full of surprises -- which is no surprise when it comes to Fred Astaire!
Other compositions from “Top Hat” include “Isn’t This a Lovely Day” and “Cheek to Cheek,” so it’s no wonder that this was also Berlin’s favorite musical score that he had worked on.
We hope you enjoy this new four-hands arrangement of this classic song!
