Can social media be a peacebuilding tool in the #EndSARS conflict situation? In 2020, the #EndSARS protests in Nigeria against the police turned into an identity conflict between the younger and older/elite generations. The anger young people directed first and foremost against police brutality quickly turned into an extensive protest against structural violence caused by government mismanagement and elite corruption, and enabled by the strict gerontocratic hierarchy that pervades Nigerian culture and society. This generational and governance divides are enduring dynamics that continues to plague Nigeria’s conflict landscape. The impact of digital technologies, especially social media in catalyzing these divides is very conspicuous. This roundtable will discuss the above issues and more. It brings together experts and activists from Nigeria, participating protesters, digital technology experts, international observers, as well as conflict and peacebuilding experts.
