The Adivasis of Assam, who have been living and working in the state’s tea gardens for generations, are still struggling to be recognised as Scheduled Tribes. Despite repeated promises, their demands remain unfulfilled. The BJP had assured them in the last two assembly elections that their ST status would be granted, but those commitments faded away after the polls. Even in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised to raise the wages of tea garden workers, yet the ground reality remains unchanged.
Main Bhi Bharat Editor Shyam Sunder revisited Bodoland during the BTC elections to meet these communities once again. A decade ago, he reported on the same issue, and shockingly, nothing has changed in 10 years. The voices of the tea tribe Adivasis continue to echo with the same demands — recognition, dignity, and justice.
