In the seventh episode of the first season, O'Hanlon travels in the footsteps of the explorer Nikolaj Przewalski (1839 - 1888). In the previous episode O'Hanlons visited Przewalski's grandnephew in Moscow and in this episode O'Hanlon travels through modern Mongolia.
Ikea. The first thing you see when you leave the Chinggis Khaan airport towards the center of Ulaanbaatar is a billboard from the Swedish store, which you now encounter in almost every corner of the world. Even in Mongolia? - you ask yourself bewildered. Where people wander around as a nomad with a felt tent?
What would Nikolaj Przewalski have found here in the seventies of the nineteenth century? The explorer who mapped central Asia. Ulaanbaatar was then called Urga and the city consisted of two parts: a Chinese and a Mongolian part. In the Chinese part, the explorer found small houses occupied by merchants and officials; in the Mongolian part lamato temples and felt tents, called yurt or ger. Furthermore: a market square, where, in addition to Chinese, Russians sold goods. Przewalski was impressed by the temples but not from the everyday street life. He found Urga dirty. In his reports, he describes how the Mongols throw their dirt on the streets and how beggars lie on the side of the road. Some are even in the middle of the market, waiting for death and being devoured by the dogs. In the cemeteries, the bodies are exposed and exposed above ground, also as food for dogs and birds of prey. 'It would be difficult to picture oneself anything more revolting', writes Przewalski.
