The Austin Allegro was, like so many British Leyland cars of the 1970s, full of promise when it was released. Sadly the compromised engine packaging forcing drastic alterations to Harris Mann’s design, not to mention infamous BL reliability and quality, meant it never realised its potential. Vanden Plas offered a more luxurious version, first in the VP 1500, then the later 1750. With the square steering wheel ditched and walnut, leather and Wilton carpets – not to mention rear picnic tables – thrown into the mix, could this posh Allegro shake its image issues and challenge the likes of the Alfasud and Citroen GS?
