Two chords. That's it. 1984's "Bad" by U2 is two chords and it is one of their most power compositions.
The Edge was noodling around on a guitar riff during "The Unforgettable Fire" recording sessions. A simple little riff coupled with a dotted eighth note delay would quickly become one of the band's biggest concert hits.
While it is just two chords - A and D - its picking pattern must be locked into the delay as that effect helps repeat and build on the pattern allowing the Edge to expand the sonic landscape with a call and repeat kind of canyon echo. It's definitely a practice exercise! But its true brilliance is the emotional power layered in its simplicity. Words and notes in perfect sync. Full stop.
The song has numerous meanings but regardless which narrative you take, its build is dramatic and emotional - even redemptive.
U2 were at their apex with "Unforgettable Fire" and "Bad" is just one of many examples they captured for what would be a near masterpiece album.
