After completing the Routeburn Track hike and a short day hike to Hooker Valley we were looking forward to a more relaxed day, so we opted for a boat cruise in Queenstown. Built in 1912, TSS Earnslaw is the only remaining coal fired steamship in the Southern Hemisphere. From as early as 1863, this steamship was used to ferry people and goods on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. This ship had a fascinating history and learning about its past was interesting.
The scenery was breathtaking as we cruised through the waters, taking in the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Wakatipu. We got off at Walter Peak Station to further enhance our experience. We had a sumptuous buffet lunch at Colonel’s Homestead Restaurant. After lunch we walked to the amphitheatre and watched a farming demonstration sheep shearing and dogs mustering the sheep. It was an incredible day trip capping off our holiday in the South Island on a high note.
