Here’s how to make sure you don’t get scammed on Airbnb.

WARNING SIGNS OF AN AIRBNB SCAM:

1. Multiple listings:
Hosts list the same property at different price points to try and double-book and make more money. Make sure you remove your price filter to see if the property is listed at different prices.

2. Deceptive or inaccurate property descriptions:
Hosts misrepresent their property to get you to pay more. For example, claiming there’s a pool or AC, when there really isn’t. Make sure to message your host about specific amenities and cleaning practices to get a record of what they say.

3. Doctored images:
Airbnb scammers will often use fake, stock, or doctored images to make the space look nicer than it actually is. Make sure you check the “accuracy” section of the property’s reviews.

4. Airbnb account hacking:
Some scammers may even hack into your Airbnb account and steal your financial information or book properties under your name. Make sure you sign up for identity theft protection like Aura.

5. Fake reviews:
Many Airbnb scammers manipulate reviews to get more bookings. Look for listings with more reviews as those are harder to fake or manipulate.

6. Payments outside of the platform:
Hosts who ask you to pay through a different app, wire transfer, or some other payment app are trying to scam you. Only pay for Airbnb listings through the official Airbnb app or site.

7. Bogus damage fees:
Hosts take advantage of Airbnb’s damage protection by making bogus claims. If you don’t pay, they’ll escalate the complaint to Airbnb. Try to take pictures and videos of the property when you first arrive and right before you leave. If you see any damage, message the host on Airbnb to let them know.

Don’t cancel your reservation! — Airbnb offers a full refund for host refunds. But if YOU cancel, you’ll be stuck with charges. Make sure that the host cancels whenever you realize you’re dealing with a scam.

Check the property’s reviews — Look for messages about accuracy of photos, location, noise, and anything else that could make the trip not what you expect.

Select “see all reviews” and then search for keywords like “photos” — This will show you specific comments about the property and if it really is the one that you’re booking.

Only enter information on “Airbnb.com” — any other domains are most likely scams.
